Fans of classic science fiction / mecha series from the 1980's are in for a surprise, because Amazon Prime in the United States has quietly begun streaming Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeada.

All three series are currently available in the original Japanese language with English subtitles. The individual episodes can be purchased for $.99 each, or the entire seasons can be viewed for free by fans with Amazon Prime subscriptions. Each series lists FilmRise, a film distribution company based in New York City, as the distributor.
Super Dimension Macross was previously released on DVD in the North America in 2001 by AnimEigo and in 2005 by ADV Films. ADV Films also released Super Dimension Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada on DVD in 2003, but all of these releases are now out-of-print. All three series were also famously used as the basis for Robotech by Harmony Gold in 1985.
This was certainly unexpected. I wonder if Amazon has any more surprises in store for old-school anime fans?
