FEATURE: Fanart Friday - Only the Good Stuff Edition

Fanart Friday returns, and I'm sorry I missed the last one, everybody--something personal came up, and Miles took over in my stead. Things are okay now, though, and we're back on track! Last week, Miles... tried... and brought us our last Hawtness installment, but this week, I'll be giving you RECOMMENDATIONS--specifically, the anime and manga that I feel you have to experience!

Damn right it's a good day, especially after you finish reading or watching one of these!

You'd think it wouldn't need to be said, but after all this time, I know better: please remember that my must-watch and must-read titles may not necessarily be yours, so obviously, our lists will be different. Now, let's get started!

DISCLAIMER: None of the art presented is the property of myself or Crunchyroll. All characters and series are tm and © their respective creators and corporate owners. ffvagabond

by Aiden

I'm gonna start with something I think everybody should stop and read right now: Takehiko Inoue's masterpiece Vagabond. The life of Musashi Miyamoto, gorgeously illustrated and told with brilliant attention to detail and just the right amount of dramatic flourish? This is the Japanese historical manga you need to read.

There's always going to be a lot of back-and-forth on what Mamoru Hosoda's best work is, but I'm still partial to his first--The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. It's small, it's personal, it'll get you to watch is other stuff, and it won't hurt you. I'll leave that to...

ffpunpun

by ひよ鉢

...Goodnight Punpun, which is relatively new but is still one of the fiercest things I've ever read. I didn't have a life nearly as rough as Punpun, but the amount of empathy this book generates toward him and his messed-up family and only-very-slightly-less-messed-up friends is hard to easily describe.

ffberserk

by 元村人

With Punpun, you're kind of stuck on the ride, but with Berserk, you see someone fight back against the shit hand that life's dealt them... and still not always win. Aside from being a hell of a ride, Berserk does western fantasy extremely well, and talks about whether it's still worth it to keep trudging on when you know it's a hopeless fight. (Spoiler alert: yes, it totally is.)

ff0080

by らはーるC

It's weird how a lot of the stuff I have to share with people focus on emotional pain. As recently recommended, Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket is short, focused, and absolutely devastating. War is not cool, but this story definitely is... in its own way.

If only for absolutely defining an entire generation of anime fans and inspiring a legion of imitators, Neon Genesis Evangelion's original 26-episode run and the insane End of Evangelion movie are definite must-watch experiences.

ffyyh

by みずを

Before he made another masterpiece with Hunter x Hunter, Yoshihiro Togashi put together a near-perfect template of the shonen battle manga with Yu Yu Hakusho. While I love the anime, I'd say go with the manga for this one--it's only 19 volumes, and tells a better story.

ffpj

by たいち

Another relatively recent addition to this list for me, Princess Jellyfish is just a whole lot of fun with characters I can't help but love. You ever feel out of place? You ever think you're not good enough? Read this.

fflodoss

by alcd

On a much more fantastical note, Record of Lodoss War's OVA is just jaw-droppingly beautiful, and is such a straightforward fantasy adventure that it's great to use when you're trying to get non-anime fans into anime!

ffgits

by いけだ

Of course, if they want something a little more cerebral, Ghost in the Shell is an excellent place to start! Anime initially kept its hooks in me with hard, old-school sci-fi, and it's hard to get the message across better than Masamune Shirow's original manga, although Mamoru Oshii's movies are another great place to start!

ffutena

by らくちー

I'm gonna skip the manga for this one and actually recommend Revolutionary Girl Utena's anime first--I kinda need that soundtrack to go with it!

ffccs

by DANGMILL

And here's where I anger a bunch of friends by recommending what I feel is the quintessential magical girl series: Cardcaptor Sakura, but the manga! The anime's fun, but it's worth tracking down the manga and seeing CLAMP's original vision for the series.

fftotoro

by jyajya

You guys know that I'm not a big Studio Ghibli or Hayao Miyazaki fan, but My Neighbor Totoro is not only my favorite of his works, but one that I wholeheartedly recommend every single time.

ffultmte

by ultmte READER SUBMISSION!

Before we wrap up, let's check out some recommendations from our readers! ultmte says you should watch sweetness and lightning, and I can't agree hard enough!

ffcstar

by celebistar READER SUBMISSION!

And no, celebistar would never recommend you to read or watch Nobunagun (very likely read over watch), or anything else by Masato Hisa like Area 51 or Jabberwocky! It's okay, I have my favorite author too, but we'll get to that.

ffgr

by YUME(省略HN:Y)

To close, I'm gonna once again recommend my all-time favorite anime, Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still...

ffrk

by ゆーき

...and my all-time favorite manga, Rurouni Kenshin. The anime's okay, but the manga... damn, that's perfection right there.

And that's everything for this week! What are your must-watch and must-read titles? Sound off in the comments and let us know!
