According to Hollywood Reporter, Christoph Waltz (Spectre, Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained) is in early negotiations to star in Alita: Battle Angel as Doctor Dyson Ido, the cybersurgeon who finds the titular cyborg and becomes her mentor.
News in May was that Rosa Salazar was cast as the lead. Salazar, who appeared in Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, was previously reported in contention for the role along with Maika Monroe, who starred in It Follows and this summer's Independence Day: Resurgence and Zendaya, the Disney Channel star of K.C. Undercover who is one of the female leads of Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Robert Rodriguez (Machete, Desperado, Spy Kids) will direct the live-action adaptation, produced by Cameron and his Lightstorm Entertainment partner Jon Landau.
Yukito Kishiro's 1990 Battle Angel Alita tells the story of a cyborg found on a rubbish heap with no memory of her former life. The original series is published in North America by Viz, while its more fight oriented follow-up Last Order moved over to Kodansha.
In 2014, the manga trilogy launched its final chapter, Mars Chronicle.
Hollywood Reporter describes the film, eyed by Fox for Summer 2018
Set in the 26th century, Alita tells of a female cyborg (Salazar) that is discovered in a scrapyard by a scientist. With no memory of her previous life except her deadly martial-arts training, the woman becomes a bounty hunter, tracking down criminals. The action-adventure story is meant to serve as a backdrop to themes of self-discovery and the search for love.
