A new art exhibit entitled "Imaginary Threats Approaching Major Cities" is celebrating decades of giant monster mayhem, with a special focus on the Gamera series of daikaiju special effects films.
The exhibition includes all sorts of production materials and film memorabilia from the Showa and Heisei era Gamera films, including props, storyboards, and scripts. There's also a chronology of giant monster attacks on Japan and modern day evacuation plans for dealing with an incursion by Legion, one of Gamera's many foes.
Other works featuring giant monsters, such as Go Nagai's Demon Lord Dante manga and Tsuburaya Productions' Ultra series of tokusatsu TV shows, are also highlighted.
One of the star attractions is a 1/1000 scale diorama of a modern Japanese city, so visitors can experience what it's like to be a towering giant monster.
There's also a collaboration cafe serving green smoothies and special edition Gamera Burgers. The burgers, which are really neat but probably not filled with turtle meat, are limited to a production run of only 20 burgers per day. An attached gift shop also features character goods (T-shirts, posters, books, toys, etc.) for Gamera and other giant monster series.
The "Imaginary Threats Approaching Major Cities" exhibition runs until November 13, 2016, in the Sky Gallery, which is located in the Tokyo City View observation deck in Tokyo Roppongi Hills. Tickets range in price from 600 yen ($5.94 US) for children up to middle-school age to 1800 yen ($17.82 US) for general admission.
