As production prepares to start in Austin next month, Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Ed Skrein, the villain in the adaptation of Marvel Comics' Deadpool and Daario Naharis in Game of Thrones, has been added to the adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's sci-fi action manga. HR says he's playing Zapan, a villain who is in possession of a weapon called the Damascus blade.
News in May was that Rosa Salazar, who appeared in Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, was cast as the lead. In August, reports were that Christoph Waltz (Spectre, Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained) was being lined up as Doctor Dyson Ido, the cybersurgeon who finds the titular cyborg and becomes her mentor. And, earlier this month, Jackie Earle Haley (recently seen in Preacher and filmed in the adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower) was cast as what was described as a monstrous cyborg in a villain role that will call for plenty of CG and greenscreen.
Robert Rodriguez (Machete, Desperado, Spy Kids) will direct the live-action adaptation, produced by Cameron and his Lightstorm Entertainment partner Jon Landau.
Hollywood Reporter describes the film, eyed by Fox for Summer 2018:
Set in the 26th century, Alita tells of a female cyborg (Salazar) that is discovered in a scrapyard by a scientist. With no memory of her previous life except her deadly martial-arts training, the woman becomes a bounty hunter, tracking down criminals. The action-adventure story is meant to serve as a backdrop to themes of self-discovery and the search for love.
