Sanrio, the creators of Helloy Kitty and numerous other cute mascot characters, are teaming up with The Great Passage, an upcoming TV anime about a team assembling a massive Japanese language dictionary, to create a new line of dictionary-based mascots known as "Jisho-tans".
The Jisho-tans will have their own short animated segments (entitled "Teach Me! Jisho-tans") that will air during the commercial episode breaks for The Great Passage. These segments will feature the Jisho-tans providing all sorts of trivia related to dictionaries and book publication. The Jisho-tans include:
Umi-kun (voiced by Azuki Shibuya), a Navy blue Jisho-tan. Umi-kun is the youngest Jisho-tan, and he is full of curiousity and questions. Umi-kun hopes to grow up to be the dictionary of the future.
Hiroshi (voiced by Sarah Emi Bridcutt), a gray Jisho-tan. Hiroshi is known for his polite speech and his academic bearing, as if he were the school class president of the Jisho-tans. An expert on the classics, Hiroshi also loves obscure and maniacal words.
Rinta (voiced by You Taichi), a red Jisho-tan. Rinta enjoy friendly and easy-to-understand words. Rinta is always in a bright and cheerful mood.
And Izumi-kun (voiced by Satsumi Matsuda), a blue Jisho-tan that is well-informed about the latest words and phrases. Because he's so stuffed with new words, Izumi-kun's body is on the chubby side. When it comes to words, he's a bit of a glutton.
The Great Passage is based on the novel of the same name by Shion Miura. The series is directed by Toshimasa Kuroyanagi and features animation by ZEXCS. The Great Passage will begin broadcasting as part of Fuji TV's "noitaminA" block beginning on October 13, 2016.
