The official website for the upcoming live-action adaptation project based on Ritz Kobayashi's mahjong-themed manga Saki today revealed that the protagonist girl Saki Miyanaga is played by 16-year-old Minami Hamabe, the New Generation Award winner of the 7th Toho Cinderella Audition held in 2011. The 155cm-tall actress is best known for her portray as Meiko "Menma" Honma in the TV drama adaptation of Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day aired in Japan in September 2015. This is her first starring role in a serial drama.
According to her comment posted on the project site, she had no experience of playing mahjong before, so needed to be trained by a mahjong professional during the shooting for over a month. She also said, "It was a really rare opportunity for me to spend time with the girls in the same generation in a drama filming, so I felt fresh in the set. By lodging together with the members of Kiyosumi High as with the manga, our bond grow stronger, and the experience became our precious memory of the summer.
I hope you can see both the drama and film!!"
The live-action project includes four-episode TV series to be aired on MBS/TBS in December 2016 and
a feature film to be released in theaters in February 2017.
