Fans who think of Osamu Tezuka solely for Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion would likely be shocked to hear that his daughter Rumiko found a variety of erotic drawings stashed away among the approximately 200 sketches in his workspace. Those more familiar with Tezuka's oeuvre would likely be completely unsurprised to hear that it includes such subject matter as a voluptuous mouse-girl or a naked woman transforming into various animals.
Of these drawings, 29 have been chosen by Rumiko for a feature called "Erotica of Osamu Tezuka," to be run in the December issue of Shincho, a Japanese literary magazine.
25 of the 29 pieces will be presented in their original soft colors in the front pages of the magazine, while the remaining four will be presented in black and white as part of the accompanying article.
Rumiko Tezuka says that eroticism was an "attractive aspect" of her father's work, and that looking at them gives the impression that he enjoyed drawing them. Indeed, people familiar with his extended works, such as Ode to Kirihito, will know that eroticism, transformation, and generally more adult themes were not uncommon areas for Tezuka to work within.
Some news sources say that Tezuka's "reasons" for drawing these pieces are unknown... though practicing artists will probably be wondering why there has to be a reason.
The December issue of Shincho, including the "Erotica of Osamu Tezuka" feature, is now on sale.
