Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers (JASRAC) announced on November 10 that Miyagi Prefectural Police's Cybercrime Division and the Wakayagi Police Station arrested a 51-year-old man from Kumagaya-city, Saitama Prefecture, on suspicion of copyright infringement (infringement of public transmission rights) on November 8. JASRAC already sued the man on October 28.
According to the police, the suspect had been using the file-sharing software Share to download about 2,000 files (over three terabytes worth) of anime music and videos, and made them available to the public without the copyright holders' permission for 10 years.
Since March 2010, JASRAC has been conducting public awareness activities asking users of file-sharing software to delete illegal files, based on guidelines promoted by the Consortium against Copyright
Infringement via File-Sharing Software (CCIF).
Meanwhile, the Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA) also requesed foreign anime
pirate sites to take down their over one million illegal anime videos in 2014, but only 60 percent
of the piracy videos were deleted. The total financial damage caused by illegal manga and anime
in 2014 was estimated at 290 billion yen (about 2.7 billion US dollars).
