Mastermind Of Acclaimed "Den-noh Coil" Anime Discusses Shockingly Small Compensation

Some noted anime directors have been sharing their harrowing war stories from the industry over the last couple of days.

The anime adaptation of Fumiyo Kouno's award-winning manga Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni (In This Corner of the World) opens in Japan on November after a recordbreaking crowdfunding campaign that raised 181 percent of its 20 million yen goal. Sunao Katabuchi (Black Lagoon, Mai-Mai Miracle) writes and directs the adaptation of the story of an ordinary family living in Kure-city, Hiroshima Prefecture, where the US dropped an atomic bomb in World War II. The project was first announced in 2012, and, in a profile on its development, Katabuchi explained that there were times he was almost broke and had only 100yen (less than $1) a day to contribute to his family's food budget.

Writer/director Mitsuo Iso called attention to the piece and noted that while he was working on Den-noh Coil, a 2007 sci-fi series that aired on the widely distirbuted NHK Educational TV, honored with Japan Media Arts Festival,  Tokyo International Anime Fair, and Seiun Award, he shocked tax officials by declaring an annual income of 200000yen ($2000).
