"Tetsujin-28" Monument in Kobe Gets a Cobalt Blue Restoration

On November 06, 2016, Wakamatsu Park in Nagata Ward, Kobe City, Japan, revealed an extensive restoration to a popular local attraction: a 15 meter tall statue of Tetsujin-28 (known as "Gigantor" in English) that celebrates the hero of the classic 1956 - 1966 manga by Mitsuteru Yokoyama.

The Tetsujin-28 Monument was originally erected in 2009 to commemorate Kobe's reconstruction efforts after the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995. Mitsuteru Yokoyama, the creator of Tetsujin-28, was born in Kobe.

After 7 years of weather and foot traffic, the statue's appearance was showing signs of deterioration. Restoration efforts began on September 17, 2016, and concluded with an unveiling ceremony attended by local residents and fans alike. The statue was originally painted blue-gray to match the color scheme of the Tetsujin-28 anime, but the restoration uses the bright cobalt blue color scheme of Yokoyama's original manga.
