Fanart Friday returns, and it's hard to believe we're at this point. Last week, I gave my last list of RECOMMENDATIONS, but this week we're starting the long look back, going all the way back to Fanart Friday's first year! There were some bumps (I'm still not proud of that first installment where I didn't credit anybody), but we quickly got back on our feet and tried a bunch of new things!
I won't be going through every Fanart Friday from September 2011 to September 2012--this'll just be a highlight reel of hits, misses, and milestones. Let's get started!

Let's go all the way back to September 23, 2011, back to Fanart Friday's First Flight, where I did it on a whim and, uh... didn't think to credit anybody. Yeah, that was smart.

Full of learnings from an understandably upset comments section, New and Improved Edition was the birth of Fanart Friday's basic formula--commentary and all. And to think, I was literally just going to put the names of characters and what titles they were from under each picture!
by A-KA
Now an almost-annual institution, Black Friday Edition was all about villains--from cacklefiend conquerors to more low-key bad people like Evangelion's Gendo Ikari.
by よろづ
I'm wondering how many Fanart Fridays I've done that are specifically about fighting games--in any case, Six-Button Edition started them all!
by msk
Our first multi-week installment covered classic, then newer mecha titles! Speaking of classic mecha, the original Macross is available for legal streaming now--sadly, no Macross Frontier yet!
by 栢山
A three-part RPG installment covered Square Enix RPGs, everybody else's JRPGs, and WRPGs!
by くろ
Rivalries are one of my favorite storytelling elements, and Pistols at Dawn Edition let me talk up these embarrassing idiots from King of Fighters! Timely, too, since KoF XIV is right around the corner!
by gomabee
We covered a bunch of different themes in our first year, but one I wish I had revisited was Kira-Kira Magical Girl Edition.
by ぱらじく
Unsurprisingly, one of the most popular Fanart Fridays in our first year was Girls with Glasses Edition, and of course the follow-up Guys with Glasses Edition!
I didn't do this every year like I'd planned to, but Gotta Catch 'em All Edition was our first Pokemon-themed installment!
by yuko
Marvel Edition--originally titled "House of Ideas Edition"--came out the same day as the first Avengers movie! Holy crap, that was four years ago?!
by 蝶月
What we now know as "The Hawtness Edition" was two separate installments: Brick House Edition (ladies) and Total Studmuffin Edition (mans). Kinda sad that we don't see much of Kyo Kara Maou these days.
by アネイ
Do the Mario Edition was a look back at Mario, his friends, his foes, his power-ups, and his wacky side jobs!
by sarakrista
I say this with a little bittersweet note--the only theme we're bringing into the final handful of installments is Back to School Edition, obviously all about anime and manga that took place at school! Who else misses the Sket-Dan as much as I do?
by 緑芭@ついったー生息
It took me almost a year, but I finally covered Crunchyroll's flagship series with Future Hokage Edition!
by joodlez
And then, we wrapped up our first year with Sailor Moon in By the Power of the Moon Edition!
by celebistar READER SUBMISSION!
For this week's reader submissions, we've got some new Nobunagun art from celebistar to prep for her next work...
by ultmte READER SUBMISSION!
... and ultmte showed some love for Guys with Glasses Edition by pointing out a nice coincidence--he and I are both cool bespectacled bros.
And that's everything for this week! What were your favorites from Fanart Friday's first year? Sound off in the comments and let us know!
