Poor Box Office Returns Squash Plans for "Terra Formars" Sequel Film

According to internal sources connected to the recent live-action film adaptation of TERRAFORMARS, a violent science fiction film based on the seinen manga written by Yū Sasuga and illustrated by Kenichi Tachibana, the film's poor performance at the box office has scuttled any plans for a sequel.

Released on some 327 screens during Golden Week on April 29, 2016, the distributors of TERRAFORMARS were reportedly aiming for 3 billion yen (about $28.6 million US) in total ticket sales during the film's theatrical release.

But despite the popularity of the manga and a strong marketing campaign, the Takashi Miike-directed adaptation only took in 150 million yen (about $1.4 million US) during its opening week. According to internal sources, when they learned of the box office numbers, "the color drained from the faces of the entire staff".

Although TERRAFORMARS eventually achieved 1 billion yen (about $9.5 million US) in ticket sales during its theatrical run, it ultimately fell far short of the distributor's goals, in effect crushing all hopes of a follow-up in the form of a sequel film.

TERRAFORMARS will be released on Bluray and DVD in Japan on September 02, 2016.
