Haikara-san ga Tooru, a 1978 - 1979 TV anime adaptation based on the romantic shōjo manga by Waki Yamato about a modern-minded girl pressured into an arranged marriage in 1920's Japan, is receiving a Bluray home video release in Japan. The release features a 2K HD remaster from the show's original negative film elements as well as remastered sound.
Haikara-san ga Tooru originally ran for 42 episodes on TV Asahi. The series is directed by Kazuyoshi Yokota and features animation from Nippon Animation. The story involves Benio, a strong-willed and tomboyish young lady who finds herself in a pickle when she discovers that her family has arranged her to be married to Shinobu, a handsome young soldier.
The original Haikara-san ga Tooru manga was serialized from 1975 - 1978 in Kodansha's Shōjo Friend manga magazine. The series has also been adapted into live-action films in 1979, 1985, 1989, and 2002. An anime theatrical film for Haikara-san ga Tooru is also in development and is scheduled to be released in 2017.
The Haikara-san ga Tooru Bluray will be released in Japan on December 21, 2016. It retails for 45,000 yen ($439.41 US) plus tax.
