Unlikely "Shōnen Jump" Heroes Team-Up for Anti-Shoplifting Campaign

A recent anti-shoplifting public service campaign featuring an unlikely pair of protagonists from two popular Weekly Shōnen Jump titles has raised a few eyebrows online.

 

 

 

The campaign includes posters featuring Kankichi "Ryo-san" Ryotsu from KochiKame and Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece. On the poster, Ryo-san states that "Shoplifting is a crime!" while Luffy says that "Good children don't shoplift!". It's a good message, but some fans have noted the cognitive dissonance of using a pirate to discourage theft:

 

 

Translation: "The police officer on the right is okay, but you on the left, do you even know what your job is?"

 

 

Admittedly, in all of the One Piece that I've watched, I don't think I've ever seen Luffy actually steal anything. Maybe he subscribes to the same pirate philosophy as Disney's Jake and the Never Land Pirates...
