The upcoming remake of Takashi Miike's thriller Shield of Straw has a new backer: EuropaCorp, headed up by Luc Besson.
The company will be teaming up with All Nippon Entertainment Works, Nippon Television, and Depth of Field to bring the English-language feature to the big screen. EuropaCorp will be among the many producers of the film, who also include Chris Weitz of Depth of Field and the original film's producer, Naoaki Kitazima of Nippon TV.
EuropaCorp president Lisa Ellzey calls Shield of Straw "right on brand" for the company, and says they are "thrilled" to be bringing the concept to an English-speaking audience.
Miike's original film, about five police officers protecting an accused killer from his latest victim's vengeful billionaire grandfather, was a finalist for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013. It was also a box office success in Japan.
ANEW is currently working on other English adaptations of Japanese properties, including Tiger and Bunny and Gaiking. They anticipate that the Shield of Straw remake will continue to help build bridges between Japan and Hollywood while presenting Japanese entertainment to a global audience.
