To meet Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences's qualifications for an Oscar award, Dutch animator Michael Dudok de Wit's The Red Turtle is set to screen in New York and Los Angeles beginning November 18, followed by a national rollout in January 2017. Production of the anime feature was tracked by anime fans as it saw Studio Ghibli working on their first foreign co-production.
The 2D-animated, dialogue-free film is produced by France’s Wild Bunch and Japan’s Studio Ghibli in association with Why Not Productions and is being distributed by Sony Pictures Classics. Dudok de Wit previously directed the Oscar-winning short Father and Daughter.
