Game Theorist Suggests "Pokémon GO" is Pre-Gen 1 Origin Story

When it comes to understanding the nuances of vidoe games, from Star Fox's boots to the fate of the children in Five Nights at Freddy's, YouTuber MatPat brings the full arsenal to the table. His series Game Theory uses deep analysis of math, science, and history to answer questions you never knew you had about video game characters.

MatPat is no stranger to the Pokémon series. His videos have covered the secret to Team Mystic's popularity and the true fate of your rival Gary's Rattata. But in his latest video, he's making a huge claim: the hit mobile game Pokémon GO is actually part of the canon game series, and is actually the predecessor to Gen 1.

The argument goes deep, bringing in everything from the Mew cloning experiments to the state of ancient Pokémon who are running wild in GO but fossilized in the first games. It even offers some theories about Professor Willow and the fate of his "candies" that totally aren't the ground-up spares that you transfer to him.

While even MatPat admits that it's likely his analysis is overthinking a bunch of forgotten loose ends in the game series, he also points out that it's a lot more fun -- especially for fans looking for answers to questions left unaddressed after several games. If nothing else, it's a great refresher in Pokémon lore and and eye-opening look back at some older games.
