After collecting a huge 36,224,000 yen (about 321,905 US dollars) from 3,374 supporters by its first crowdfunding project, the anime adaptation film of Fumiyo Kouno's award-winning manga Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni/In This Corner of the World was released in Japan on November 12 and has become a surprising hit in the Japanese box office.
The World War II drama featuring an ordinary family who lived in Kure-city, Hiroshima Prefecture, where was one of the areas destroyed by the atomic bombs, won the Hiroshima Peace Film Award at The 3rd Hiroshima International Film Festival and is scheduled to screen in 14 countries/region in the world, including the UK, France, Germany, and South America.
Director Sunao Katabuchi is planned to visit the countries to promote the film and to know how the foreign
audience receive it. A new crowdfunding project to support his travel expense launched on November 22,
then immediately reached its goal of 10,800,000 yen (about 96,000 US dollars) only in one day. As of
November 24, it has collected 16,804,800 yen (149,322 US dollars) from 1,859 supporters. The production
committee of the film initially expected that it would need at least 70 days to reach the goal. They announced
today that they need to limit the number of the supporters and will hold more report meetings by Katabuchi
after he returns.
Katabuchi jokingly said on his Twitter, "(If the money keeps increasing) I might be sent to the moon."
